This outfitter operates their Mountain Nyala safaris in both the Arusi Mountains and the Bale Mountains at altitudes anywhere from 6,000 to 11,000 feet. The permanent camps have running water (both hot and cold), indoor toilets and showers. Most of the terrain is steep, heavy old growth forest with the areas above 10,000 feet thinning to the beginnings of heather and lobelia.
Another area, The Munessa concession, is 7,000 feet in elevation and is comprised of old forest and new, cultivated cedar forest where the new world record 18″+ Menelik’s Bushbuck was taken. Recently, a 43.5” Mountain Nyala was also taken here. The outfitter conducts only three safaris per year here and they typically sell out years in advance. Tented Camps are used for this area.
Several Mountain Nyala over 40″ have been taken in each concession over the last few years including a 42″ and a 41.5”. Mountain Nyala is the main species hunted but a very healthy population of Menelik’s Bushbuck is also present. Hunting is conducted both on foot and, in the higher areas, by horseback. Often spike camps are used. The thick forest means that normally shots are less than 200 yards: however, one must be prepared for the possibility of a longer cross canyon shot in excess of 350 yards.
Other species found in the mountain concessions include Spotted Hyena, Abyssinian Bohor Reedbuck, East African Bush Duiker, Leopard, Giant Forest Hog, and Colobus Monkey. There are limited license quotas for these species. These are difficult but rewarding hunts, and the scenery is absolutely beautiful.
